The Resume That Works

The job market is bursting at the seams!   Competition is so intense that an employer can practically pick out from dozens of applicants who share the same educational background and have common skills and equal intellect.   In the search for jobs, an applicant has to outshine the rest.  That person has to be conspicuous,  so to speak. If a jobseeker doesn’t achieve this, he or she will most likely miss the chance to make it to interview.

In making a resume, a person must make the necessary effort to be noticed.  According to John Mazzochi, a manager at a staffing firm,  ”Your resume is essentially a 15 to 20-second commercial about you.” You have to make the screener become interested in you.  Make resumes that are exciting by avoiding generic objectives and itemization of long, tedious previous employment duties.  In other words, try to be original and inventive.  Do not go with the “ordinary”.

Here are a few tips in making an interesting resume cover letter.

First of all,  follow a job’s posting directions. No matter how good your credentials and how qualified you are for the job, you could easily be dismissed out from screening because following instructions is imperative in any job.  You will be amazed to find out that plenty of potentially-good applicants are precluded right away simply because they failed to follow instructions.

Numbers could work wonders! Quantify your achievements. If possible, show revenue numbers, percentages, money signs, etc. An employer’s eye is easily drawn towards numbers and symbols relevant to his business or organization.

Like a real advertisement,   use testimonials as an added eye-catcher to your resume. For example,  a statement of recommendation from your previous employer will not only make you commendable but it chiefly strengthens your positive claims regarding your performance skills. Corporate sales trainer Andrea Sittig-Rolf even suggests that placing a quote from a previous employer at the very top of your resume cover letter could be a real advantage.

Write a short summary about your talents, strengths, experiences, as they relate to the job you’re applying for. Your work history would appear more exciting with this short essay.

In summing up these tips, make sure that your job descriptions are achievement-oriented and exciting. Make your employer-to-be feel your enthusiasm and your willingness for the job. Send an unverbalized, unwritten message that you’re the person they would want to fill the job and hiring you instead of others would be a very good idea.   A well-done resume is the secret to getting the job you want.
